My 2006 Woodward Dream Cruise Page

This was my second visit to Woodward, and it was better than last year. It also rained again, but we survived. On Friday morning, a group of us headed out to Woodward to cruise the loop and look over the Chevy Triangle (it wasn't quite setup yet). During the cruise, I had my camcorder attached to my windshield mount going. We joined Woodward at 12 mile and headed north. The tape ran continuously until we got back down to 13 mile.

We stopped for lunch at the Redcoat Inn. Afterwards, we walked around a bit, taking some pictures and then split up. Most of the group headed back to the hotel. Myself and one other headed back north past Birmingham because I had seen something up there I just had to confirm. Well, it was just what I thought – the Monster Garage Cold Stone Creamery ice racing van. Parked in front of the local Cold Stone Creamery of course.

On Saturday morning, I was up early to get out to our bank parking lot. I had volunteered to help with the setup of the tent and any other short work needing done. Of course, this is when the rain was coming down. Not hard, but a steady annoying drizzle. At the bank, we find out that the local town had set up their souvenier stand and a mobile stage in the bank parking lot. The folks were cooperative though and allowed us to move their tent out into the access lane and they also called to have the stage removed. Good thing as we had about 50 SSRs show up eventually. We pretty much filled the lot up.

After lunch, a few of us decided to brave the now quite heavy traffic and do some cruising. “Cheating”, we took a detour west about 1 mile and then headed north to Birmingham. There, we rejoined Woodward and headed back south to the bank. The trip was only 4 miles south, but it took just over 1 hour. My video tape ended a few minutes before I made it back.

After returning, the sky had cleared quite a bit and most of us contented ourselves by sitting along the curb and watching the cars go by. I took a lot of pictures that afternoon. Sadly, some really nice shots never came out. Some of the drivers were passing by quite fast as the traffic on our side of the street was light. The opposite was gridlock, typical of the entire run north to Birmingham (I hadn't been past that up to Pontiac to know what that's like – I heard it was just as bad).

On Sunday, we traveled west to Lansing. There we had a picnic put together for the SSR owners, and former employees of the Lansing Craft Center (where the SSR was produced) and ASC (who made a large number of the parts and assemblies). It was a wonderful day weather-wise and the park setting couldn't have been better. Sadly, the turnout wasn't as good as expected. After the picnic, we formed a caravan and headed through town out to LCC. There we parked in a line for a photo shoot in front of the main factory wall. This is probably the last time we'd ever see SSRs parked at Lansing as the plant is slated for demolition.

Very cheesy cut/paste job of the SSR's at the picnic.
